Historic downtown building will showcase local artists on their own TURF

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 17–Super Bowl artistry will extend off the field and into an Indianapolis landmark as IDADA, the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association, kicks off Turf, a presentation of experiential art and design. This brand-new presentation of 20 juried artists is Jan. 14 through Feb. 5, 2012, just 1,700 yards from Lucas Oil Stadium.

The old Indianapolis City Hall building at the corner of Alabama and Ohio streets – a 100-year- old landmark formerly housing the Indiana State Museum and, most recently, the interim Central Library – will become the IDADA Art Pavilion, a public space where selected artists will begin installation of their works in the coming weeks. A complete list of artists will be available on the IDADA website (www.idada.org) by 5 p.m. today.

The IDADA Art Pavilion will be free and open to the public daily; organizers are working with I.P.S. and other organizations to arrange group tours during the week. In the evenings, the pavilion will be available to host eclectic Super Bowl gatherings and parties with catering provided by the Skyline Club.

IDADA is planning a major kickoff event at the Art Pavilion the weekend of Jan. 13. (Details forthcoming.)

Starting drive for Turf

IDADA envisions the Art Pavilion as the launching point of Turf, which aims to drive visitors from the pavilion to various IDADA-member galleries in a 20-square-block area of downtown Indianapolis. Turf will culminate with the Feb. 3 “First Friday” gallery tour, making it a highlight of the citywide series of events Super Bowl weekend.

“Indianapolis has a wide variety of high-caliber artists and galleries, and this is our chance to let the world know it,” says IDADA Treasurer and Art Pavilion Coordinator Mark Ruschman. “It is a rare opportunity to showcase all that we have to offer to a national and international audience.”

“To my knowledge,” he added, “this has never been attempted by a Super Bowl host city before.”

The IDADA Art Pavilion and Turf is a joint effort of IDADA, the Super Bowl Host Committee, the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Mayor’s office.

The IDADA Art Pavilion, located in the historic Indianapolis City Hall building at the corner of Alabama and Ohio streets, will make its debut Jan. 13 with an opening gala beginning at 6 p.m. This will officially launch TURF, a project designed to drive visitors from the art pavilion to various IDADA-member galleries in a 20-square-block area of downtown Indianapolis.

You can find a list of the artists selected for the juried art exhibition at the IDADA Turf website, as well as a complete list of Indianapolis artists, art galleries and dealers participating in TURF.

The IDADA Art Pavilion will host multiple experiential art installations from Jan. 14 through Super Bowl weekend, closing Feb. 5. The pavilion and exhibition will be free and open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. In the evenings, the pavilion will host upscale pre-Super Bowl parties and events.

Tickets for the Jan. 13 Opening Gala are $35 for IDADA members and $50 for non-members. Tickets include access to TURF installations, hors d’oeuvre provided by the Skyline Club and a cash bar. Online ticket purchases are available at http://turfindy.eventbrite.com.
